What do you remember as your favorite time of year? Why?

Fall or autumn. The harvest being
brought in. Fall tillage being completed
for another year. Getting things ready for the
winter months. Like Fall even more now when
we can stay warm by the corn burning stove.

Tell about an experience at the dentist's office.

While I was growing up I
didn't go to a dentist. So when I got
out of HS my top teeth were decayed already
and it showed badly when I smiled.
Along about at 27 I had all my top teeth
extracted and a false plate with new teeth
put in. After 2 weeks I got used to the,
Some years later I had all my lower teetch extracted
after many fillings & caps & toothache.
I then went to outpatient in old hospital where
they put me out and pulled all the lower teeth and
put a plate in. Got along great.

Tell about an experience at the doctor's office.

When I was eight yrs old I was
sick with a fever. Didn't know
what caused it but my Dad took me
to Dr. Alrich in Sioux Center. He suggested
a penicilin shot. So I dropped my pants
and cried because it hurt. Anyway
I got better in a day or two.

Do you have any other good stories about being injured?

I had a bloody nose
on time playing BB. We collided and I
ended up with a bloody nose. I was over
real soon.

Did you ever need stitches?

Yes, on my hand one time and
also after 2 hip replacement surgeries.

What bones have you broken and how?

Didn't break any
But had 2 hip replacements done one
in 1995 and the other in 2001. These
surgeries were the only time I was in the
hospital overnight. Now hips are doing great. No
pain but have to remember not to lift
anything heavier than 50 lbs. That causes them to ache.

Yes, I couldn't eat it it
smelled like pig scoves. (?)
I took it home and the dog
wouldn't eat it either. When we
are in AZ we got pizza from Pizza Hut
and I only eat pineapple & ham. It
tastes good but once in a while I'll
need a Tum to cool my gut

The student was able to get
it out but hurt some. I was always
sorry that happened.

Poking a just sharpened lead
pencil in a students arm. The
lead broke off and stayed in the skin.

Tell about how you spent your Sundays.

Chores from 7-8:30
Breakfast then back to bed.
To church at 1:30 till 3. SS
from 3-4. To Grandpa Plender or De Haan
for lunch then home chores again.
When I got old enough to drive I went to
Christian Endeavor at 7:30. Maybe a date.

Cleaning the hog house, hauling manure
to field in winter and field work in
Spring & Fall.

No, I was afraid I'd miss
something if I didn't go to school.
I didn't hate school but I was
glad when I was finished.

Tell about a school principal you remember.

His name was James Bottenfield
He had a mustache and always
looked sideways out of his eyes.
He'd get wrinkles in his forehead
then we knew it was time to
shape up. He was also my typing class
instructor. My typing got to a 
speed of 55 words per minute. The highest
speed student got close to 70 wpm.

Tell about being in a school play or program.

My senior year I played the part of
a father of a family who had 2 stories
going at the same time. The son was in
trouble when I (as father) was expecting a
visit from a business man but the son
didn't know who he was and sent him
on his way without me talking to him.
I was supposed to get a headache and faint
which happened at intermission time I fell on a piece
of toast with jelly on it. I got my
suit dirty with jelly. Which made it more
dramatic. It ended like it was
supposed to.
